On 03/14/19, the Raleigh chapter of the CAS sponsored their second listening session. Six members attended and engaged in a lively discussion about their own personal systems and audio experiences, before settling into the music. The host’s system was comprised of the new Magico A3 loudspeakers and Luxman L-509X integrated amp. In addition, an A/B comparison of Redbook vs. MQA and two different cables were conducted. The MQA demo was facilitated using Tidal Masters and a Moon 280d with SimAudio’s new MIND2 upgrade. Like most media types, the resulting sound is really a product of the engineer who mixed the recording. As with Redbook, some MQA songs sound better than others, but everyone liked what they heard. The cable demostration consisted of Nordost Heimdall II vs. Clarus Aqua. All agreed the Clarus provided a deeper low end and the Nordost was more detailed, but both were controlled and enjoyable to listen too. However, everyone agreed, cables do make a difference! Anyone in the Raleigh chapter willing to host a listening session in Q2 is encouraged to go to the “Contact” section of the CAS website and advise as such.
